A couple of mixes here that will give you the full spectrum of maybe the greatest production duo drum and bass has ever seen.

St Alban’s based Source Direct made their debut under the moniker ‘Sounds Of Life’ with their excellent ‘Trust Me EP’ in 1994 on what was already a major jungle label; Certificate 18. The beats were typically 8bit and grainy but the skills where there.

From then on they went on to create some of the finest beats imaginable.
With a little tutoring from the legandary Photek, they composed tunes for all kinds as labels such as Good Looking, Metalheadz, Mo Wax and Basement under a slew of different aliases.

They later became one of few D&B acts to sign to a major label, in 1998 their deal with Virgin and its offshoot ‘Science’ saw the release of their album debut ‘Exorcise The Demons’ and have the classic ‘Call & Response’ feature in the cult vampire flick; Blade.

At the turn of the millenium Jim Baker and Phil Aslett disbanded leaving the Source Direct legacy behind, Phil has had somewhat of a revival in the D&B scene as of late recording as Phil Source and running his own successful label appropriately called ‘Vampire’, however what happened to Jim is still somewhat of a mystery.

10 years after the split, these mixes can take you back, through the deep rainforest sounds of Complexities, spaced out vibes of Intallect and the militant drones of the Dark Metal remix.

The words ‘unreleased Dillinja’ will always grab the attention of Drumtrip, and even more so due to the fact that this release is out there on vinyl somewhere.

It appears to be on a test press with the catalogue number VDLP7, along with VIPs of Krome & Time’s ‘The Licence’, Photek -- First Sequence and Hopa & Bones -- Mystical Horns, none of which have ever been released.

Info taken from the discogs.com entry;

Tracklist

A1 Krome & Time - The License (VIP Mix)
B1 Dillinja - You
C1 Studio Pressure - First Sequence (VIP Mix)
C2 Skanna - The Greatest Thing (Summertime Mix)
D1 Hopa & Bones - Mystical Horns (VIP Mix)
D2 Mystic Moods Co-producer LTJ Bukem - Music Is So Special

Crugga of Crugga records has upped the video for all of the unreleased tunes on Youtube, the Dillinja track being the highlight for me. Watch the amens on the 2nd drop!

Yes another Bukem remix, this one of the lesser played ones, for what reason I’m unsure.
What I do know is that Bukem, alongside Photek and Dillinja got a lot of remix work from 94 to 96 from major labels, and major labels usually mass produce their records which of course equals; bargain jungle.

Michelle Gayle might be best remembered for her stint on UK soap stalwart ‘Eastenders’, but I will remember her for this splendid remix Bukem knocked up for her 1994 hit ‘Sweetness’
Totally different from the original, Bukem uses minimal vocals, sweeping and bubbling synths, of course along with a fairly standard 2-step ‘Think’ break and sub bass combo.

It’s a nice, deep tune, nothing less than would you would expect from Bukem at his peak, and best of it came out on RCA and is dirt cheap nowadays.

Grab this from discogs.com for as little as 49-bleedin’-pence (£0.49)

Right, I know this goes outside the Drumtrip time zone (93-96) but its worth putting on here.

An epic mix from some top mixers (myself included of course) which give you pretty much an all round snapshot of Drum & Bass between 1998 to 2000.

DJ Trace (Duncan Hutchinson), is a name that has been around from the early beginnings of jungle. Most appreciated by me for his lush pads and interesting drum construction, Trace released a fair few pieces on wax that will stay in my record collection for ever.

Lost Entity was his first solo release on the fairly popular Lucky Spin Recordings. Being a Hardcore/Jungle label, Lucky Spin was only active for 3 years. Within that time span, they managed to deliver a quality catalogue that should not be overlooked. The original Lost Entity was released in 1993, and is, in itself, a decent release. In 1995, however, DJ Trace remixed his own tune. The result? A classic… DJ Trace – Lost Entity (Remix)

In good DJ Trace fashion, the tune has several elements, and it progresses nicely through them all. Even though it is produced at a lower bpm (around 155), the tune sounds great sped up to match the 160+ bpm which was more of the “Jungle” norm.

You can get your own copy for about £10.00 to £15.00 here. Not quite a bargain, but a must have none the less.
